    hi Ruth,
Thanks for that link to Strong Spirit Strong Mind resources.
For the drinking guidelines: our national recommendations are now the same for men and women - just 2 small drinks per day to reduce long term risk of harms (and no alcohol in pregnancy).
They made the men's and women's recommended limits the same when they last revised the guidelines. That's because even though men get less affected by the same amount of alcohol, men take more risks and so experience more harms from alcohol.
You can see the national guidelines at:

    Hi Kate, Ezra and all
v helpful links Kate. Couple of issues, 1. in the linked brochure (Kate's link) I am a bit troubled by the suggestion of 2 standard drinks p day equally for both men and women... am I mistaken? 2. I amend my earlier post, I was mistaken, the brochure I am recalling is from WA, Drug & Alcohol office.

    Specific leaflet is
'What our women need to know about alcohol - HP010387'

    http://www.dao.health.wa.gov.au/AboutDAO/WorkforceDevelopment/trainingDAOSemester22008/tabid/238/Default.aspx?PageContentID=200

I searched in Aboriginal Health InfoNet Health promotion resources by leaflet name and found it.

    Hi Ruth and all,
You're right, ADAC has a pamphlet and a flipchart, which you can download from this link:
    www.adac.org.au/resources.php?resType=FASD

The Alcohol Awareness resources (developed by some of us at Sydney uni, clinicians and Aboriginal controlled agencies) have good visual resources for general populations, and touch on FASD prevention briefly. Also available for free download.

    Hi Ezra,
Here are a few resources about brain stories.

    The grog brain story

    The gunja (yarndi) brain story
    http://www.healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au/key-resources/promotion-resources?lid=17942

    The mental health brain story
    http://www.healthinfonet.ecu.edu.au/key-resources/promotion-resources?lid=15730

There are not too many FASD resources that I know of, but Queensland Health have a brochure called Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs during pregnancy and breastfeeding (2009).

    Hi Ezra,
Contact the Drug and Alcohol Office in WA. They have a range of pamphlets in the "Strong Spirit, Strong Mind" series relating to FASD. Contact number is (08) 9370 0333. Ask for Wendy Casey.

don't know if I'm typing in the right splace but I was interested in the Brain Story Flip chart and have enquired at the ADIS 1800 177 833 (Rural Area) But my ongoing enquiry is - has anyone heard of a pamphlet that I can get on FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) that I can hand out to our women on any women with an AOD issue after counselling. Maybe in a picture format etc. Thanks for your response. Ezra Saveka / ATODS Cairns 4870 Nth Qld.

    Hi All,
My area is Volatile Substance Misuse, are there any others out there who deal only with VSM?

We don't deal with just VSM, however we where approach by Youth Justice to put together a group program for Indigenous youth. We came up with a 4 session group that worked well and had great reports back from Youth Justice, if you would like further information in regards to content let me know

Hi, St Vincent's is currently delivering a program based on the "brain stories" that we developed in 2009. The program is education and treatment of alcohol and gunja. Part of the education is looking at withdrawal - if anyone is interested in certain aspects of withdrawal or even aspects of the brain stories let me know via this area - my background is addiction medicine nursing. cheers Sharyn

Sharryn: yes, great links. re Adult alchohol guidelines brochure - this is very useful, I often use this or the earlier version. I would really like to see something with other common drinks of choice, with pictures, in particular mix spirits (bourbon & cola) etc, in different can sizes. Also, I thought the women's daily intake was reviewed down to 1 per day? or am I mistaken?
re cannabis resources, just checked out and downloaded the Indigenous fact sheets (some of them) and looking forward to viewig these. Also ordered the free posters.
